Lednice - Valtice Area

One of the most interesting areas in South Moravia is the Lednice – Valtice complex. In 1996, this magnificent landscape complex measuring 283 m2 earned itself a listing among the UNESCO cultural-historical wonders of the world. It was built over the centuries by lords from the family of Liechtenstein, and we find it situated between the municipalities of Valtice and Lednice.
Valtice is known as the “Capital City of Wine”. Bountiful wine celebrations – grape-harvesting, wine-tastings and commented tours of the vineyards take place in the little wine-producing town. The landscape interlaced by a dense network of cycle lanes is dotted by wine cellars, and the national wine-producing centre, the National Centre of Wine, can be found here. The wine-tasting exhibition, open all year round, offers wine-tasting of the best wines from Bohemia and Moravia.
Romantic Chateau Lednice is the main dominating feature of the complex. It includes the vast chateau park with its beautiful and fascinating architectonic works. One of them is the 60 metre high Minaret – observatory, from which you can see even as far as the tip of the tower of St-Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna. The building from the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries was built on wooden stilts in heavily swampy terrain.
The admiration of visitors is evoked also by unusual chateaus which the Liechtensteins had built to make hunting expeditions more pleasant. Among the best known include the romantic ruins of John’s Castle, Hunting Lodge and Pond House, Apollo Temple, the Three Graces or Rendezvous.
With its historical sites and striking garden architecture, the Lednice-Valtice complex is among the vastest artificially created territories in Europe.
